ABOUT ALEX BURGOS
Alex Burgos is a lifelong Buffalo resident, West Side homeowner, and experienced public servant seeking to represent the 149th Assembly District. Raised in a union household, Alex is the son of a retired Buffalo Public School teacher and Buffalo Teachers Federation member, Elizabeth Gonzalez, and U.S. Army veteran and Niagara Street small business owner, Efrain Burgos. Growing up in a working-class family instilled in him a deep respect for organized labor, public service, and the dignity of a hard day’s work.

Alex brings experience across New York State government, nonprofit administration, public health, and community development. His career has focused primarily on nonprofit work and public service within New York State government, including service as a former PEF union member. Throughout his work, Alex has built strong relationships with organized labor and has consistently advocated for prevailing wages, worker protections, and union jobs.

In the area of public health and health equity, Alex worked as part of countywide COVID-19 and MPOX vaccine outreach efforts in coordination with Erie County and New York State. This work included collaboration with public health professionals and nationally recognized experts. Alex also served as a member of the Governor’s Ending the Epidemic Task Force, contributing to efforts that expanded mobile clinics, neighborhood-based health programming, and access to care in communities such as Grant Street and the surrounding West Side. In this role, he also advocated against the 304-B Medicaid carveout, helping protect Federally Qualified Health Center funding and community-based health resources.

Within state government, Alex worked as part of interagency teams to help develop and implement standard operating procedures, collaborated with the Governor’s Executive Chamber on health and safety regulations, and contributed to the drafting and support of legislative and regulatory amendments that were later enacted into law. He also worked with the Governor’s office and partner agencies to help expand New York State Human Services Network funding, ensuring frontline organizations had the resources needed to serve vulnerable populations.
Alex was a contributing member of the team that developed and implemented the Cannabis Community Reinvestment Program, which delivered millions of dollars in grants statewide for housing, mental health services, workforce development, youth programming, and community revitalization. Alex also has a strong record of supporting small businesses and nonprofit organizations. He has helped organizations secure private foundation grants, assisted small businesses in navigating permitting and regulatory processes, supported local businesses in accessing institutional contracts, and worked with partners to secure Buffalo Sabres Foundation funding to expand youth sports opportunities on the West Side.

As a deeply rooted community leader, Alex has helped organize toy, turkey, and backpack giveaways, annual summer barbecues, and neighborhood events. He has partnered with community organizations on beautification initiatives, sponsored street clean-ups, supported efforts to expand broadband access and distribute laptops in underserved census tracts, helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local nonprofits, and coordinated food and mask distribution during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He is currently working in partnership with the City of Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning on the Lower West Side Neighborhood Plan to help ensure residents are centered in long-term investments related to housing stability, infrastructure, and quality of life. Prior to this work, Burgos and other community advocates were in regular communication with national partners, including the White House Hispanic Initiative, regarding issues impacting the West Side community.

Alex is deeply committed to education, public safety, and democratic participation. He is actively working with government and community partners to help prevent the closure of Buffalo Public School #3 (D’Youville Porter). He was appointed by Governor Kathy Hochul to serve on the New York State Hate & Bias Prevention Unit, where he works with others to combat hate crimes and domestic extremism. Alex also served as an At-Large Delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, previously served as Vice Chair within an Erie County Democratic Committee Zone, and was a member of the 2025 Judicial Screening Committee. He also worked on the special election campaign of U.S. Congressman Tim Kennedy and served as Campaign Manager for West District Buffalo Board of Education Member Talia Rodriguez.

Alex’s work has been recognized by community organizations, educational institutions, and government partners, and he has been featured by outlets including NBC News, PBS, Telemundo, C-SPAN, City & State Magazine, Buffalo Business First, and Buffalo State University. He has also received acknowledgments from the New York State Comptroller’s Office, the New York State Executive Chamber, the City of Buffalo, and organizations throughout Western New York.

Alex Burgos is ready to do more. The 149th Assembly District deserves representation that is present, effective, and grounded in the community — leadership that understands how to work collaboratively to move policy, funding, and partnerships in ways that deliver real results for working families and neighborhood communities.
